GUIDANCE THROUGH THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND BEYOND
The college application process can be daunting and stressful for both students and families. Joan strives to provide a sense of calm and a candid perspective from start to finish. She helps students create college essays and applications that reflect what makes them unique and present their individuality in the best way possible.
Throughout this process, Joan establishes a strong connection with each of her students that continues beyond their transition to college. Many students contact her during their college years to ask for guidance around course selection, or other academic issues.
DECISION MAKING
Reviewing course selection for high school years
Identifying a best next step (PG, Gap year, College)
Developing and continually refining an appropriate college list
Coaching on extracurricular activities, community service, paid work, achievements, internships, and summer planning
Advising on timeline for Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision deadlines
Assisting with deferral or wait-list standing, if applicable
Assisting with the final school selection
PROCESS
Meetings with parents and student
Providing the Birkman Signature assessments along with a variety of others to help the student understand more about their interests, aptitudes and goals
Offering guidance and suggestions for SAT and ACT testing
Developing a roadmap to help determine a potential course of study
Identifying criteria for best/suitable college environment
Advising on and preparing for campus visits and interviews
Coaching on correspondence with admissions representatives and with faculty in fields of interest
Managing application process timeline
SUPPORTING MATERIALS
Collecting and reviewing educational and personal histories, school records, and educational testing.
Developing and refining a resume
Advising on portfolio and/or athletic resumes, or making referrals where needed
Assisting with the preparation of applications and materials
Brainstorming essay topics and assisting with evolution of essays and supporting original student writing
Throughout the process, I will be providing continual support, encouragement, and reliable information via phone/Zoom consultations with parents, as needed.
